The Transformation of Iphis

from Metamorphoses by Adam Haws

/

about

All the sounds in this piece are of my voice. I explore the uncanny quality of taking a low sound and pitching it up and vice versa. On a more literal level, there’s the contrast of high sounds at the beginning and low sounds at the end with the eponymous transformation in the center of the piece. This depicts Iphis, born a girl but raised a boy to deceive her father. When Iphis falls in love with and is to marry Ianthe, she prays to the goddess Isis and is transformed from a girl to a boy.
