The Plague and the Myrmidons

from Metamorphoses by Adam Haws

/

about

A plague afflicts the island of Aegina and its onslaught provokes King Aeacus’s desperation for an army to replace the dead. The opening represents the plague through a chord progression that becomes more and more microtonal, distorted, and granulated. Emerging from the progression is a representation of Zeus’s sacred oak tree, complete with fireflies, from which teems of ants emerge. After Aeacus’s prayer, a huge transformation occurs, and the voices and the march of the Myrmidons, transformed from ants, materialize before a final soft gust of wind.
