Orpheus Emerges From the Underworld

from Metamorphoses by Adam Haws

/

about

It begins with a depiction of the darkness of the Underworld. Orpheus plays his lyre to enchant the denizens and argue for the return of his beloved Eurydice. Their footfalls are audible as they make their ascent through cave-like passages, Orpheus obliged to avoid looking back at her lest he lose her again. When Orpheus ultimately gives in, we hear a sharp intake of breath as Eurydice is sucked back into the cavern. (You can faintly hear her “farewell”, which I recorded backwards, Twin Peaks-style.) As Orpheus emerges from the gloom, he plays his lament on the lyre while the pastoral sound of recorders surround him.
