Canens Wanders in Search of Picus

from Metamorphoses by Adam Haws

/

about

The sorceress Circe falls in love with Picus, King of Latium, but he spurns her due to his love of his wife Canens, another in a series of nymphs. This diptych portrays two scenes. In the first, Picus has been transformed by Circe into a woodpecker, and this section is entirely constructed from woodpecker sounds. In the second, Canens searches for her husband for 6 days and nights and sings in her haunting voice for his return before dissolving into thin air. I used the humble slide whistle to create the plaintive sounds of Canens’ song.
