Alcyone's Dream

from Metamorphoses by Adam Haws

about

The love of King Ceyx and Queen Alcyone of Trachis was deep and abiding. Ceyx, to Alcyone’s chagrin, departs on a journey to consult an oracle after familial tragedy. When Ceyx is consumed by the sea in a shipwreck, Juno makes a journey to the gods of sleep, and asks Morpheus – who can appear in any guise in dreams – to take the form of Ceyx to convey to Alcyone his demise at sea. Alcyone is deeply moved at seeing her husband and saddened at the tragic turn of events. After Ceyx’s body washes onshore, both he and Alcyone are turned into kingfishers (aka halcyon birds, halcyon sharing an etymology with Alcyone). This ambient work loops many layers of cello lines over oceanic sounds evoking Ceyx at sea. At the end, harmonics begin to transform into kingfishers.
