Acis & Galatea vs. Polyphemus

from Metamorphoses by Adam Haws

/

about

The cyclops Polyphemus falls madly but unrequitedly in love with the nymph Galatea, whose affections are shared with the mortal Acis. This piece opens with a pastoral landscape enjoyed by the protagonists, evoked by recorder lines and the syncopated appearance of panpipes. It gathers momentum and intensity, turning into a kind of pastoral techno, before Polyphemus breaks into the scene, roars loudly (voiced here by a wild boar), Galatea jumps into the water, and Acis is killed by the cyclops hurling a giant boulder at him. His blood trickles out (the water sounds briefly referring back to the earlier “Niobe” piece) before Acis is transformed by his lover into an immortal river spirit.
